The Daily Herald
1115 South Main Street, Columbia, TN 38401
The Daily Herald, located in Columbia, TN, is published Sunday through Friday.
The Daily Herald serves Columbia, Maury County and southern Middle Tennessee. It was founded as a weekly newspaper in 1848, when Columbia's population was 1,700. In 1899, the newspaper switched to daily delivery. The city now boasts a population in excess of 34,000,with a county population exceeding 80,000. Weekday circulation is 10,982 and Sunday circulation is 12,309, according to audited figures.
In 1916, the newspaper was purchased by Walter D. Hastings and James I. Finney. It was acquired by the Donrey Media Group, the current owner, in 1983. Douglas Beel was publisher of the newspaper until 1996,when Mark Palmer was named publisher.
Because of the vision and determination of one man, the Donrey Media Group has experienced tremendous growth since its beginnings in Okmulgee, OK, 56 years ago.
The late Donald W. Reynolds, founder of Donrey, bought his first newspaper, the Okmulgee Daily Times, in 1940, and from there Mr. Reynolds expanded Donrey's holdings across the nation. After Mr. Reynolds' death in 1993, Stephens Inc. of Little Rock, AR, co-founded by the late Jack Stephens, purchased the Donrey Media Group. Stephens continued Mr. Reynolds' business philosophy of locally operated companies and renamed the company The Stephens Media Group in 2002. In June 2006, the company became known as Stephens Media LLC.
Most of Stephens' newspapers operate in small- to medium-sized towns and cities, but the company also owns the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a 167,000-circulation newspaper.
Because of the solid financial foundation laid down by Mr. Reynolds, Stephens continues to be a leader in the communications industry. Stephens Media LLC looks forward to continued success.
